Variational bounds on scattering parameters

چکیده
The theoretical formulation of the variational bounds on scattering parameters is briefly reviewed. The upper and lower bounds on scattering parameters are realized by the manner in which the distortion of the target during the scattering is treated, in terms of the static and adiabatic pictures. The variational bounds are obtained by gradually improving the trial functions that describe the target polarization.

Two Useful Bounds for Variational Inference
We review and derive two lower bounds on the expectation of the log-sum function in the context of variational inference. The first bound relies on the first-order Taylor expansion about an auxiliary parameter. The second bound relies on an auxiliary probability distribution. We show how these auxiliary parameters can be removed entirely from the model. We then discuss the advantage of keeping ...
متن کاملBounds in proton-proton elastic scattering at low momentum transfer
We present a bound on the imaginary part of the single helicity-flip amplitude for spin 1/2-spin 1/2 scattering at small momentum transfer. The variational method of Lagrange multipliers is employed to optimize the single-flip amplitude using the values of σtot, σel and diffraction slope as equality constraints in addition to the inequality constraints resulting from unitarity. Such bounds prov...
متن کاملNeural Variational Random Field Learning
We propose variational bounds on the log-likelihood of an undirected probabilistic graphical model p that are parametrized by flexible approximating distributions q. These bounds are tight when q = p, are convex in the parameters of q for interesting classes of q, and may be further parametrized by an arbitrarily complex neural network. When optimized jointly over q and p, our bounds enable us ...
متن کاملVariational Field Theoretic Approach to Relativistic Scattering
Nonperturbative polaron variational methods are applied, within the so-called particle or worldline representation of relativistic field theory, to study scattering in the context of the scalar Wick Cutkosky model. Important features of the variational calculation are that it is a controlled approximation scheme valid for arbitrary coupling strengths, the Green functions have all the cuts and p...
متن کاملWave-Number-Explicit Bounds in Time-Harmonic Scattering
In this paper we consider the problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic waves by a bounded sound soft obstacle in two and three dimensions, studying dependence on the wave number in two classical formulations of this problem. The first is the standard variational/weak formulation in the part of the exterior domain contained in a large sphere, with an exact Dirichletto-Neumann map applied ...
